Mexico slaps 50% tariffs on Indian goods; $1 billion in auto exports at risk.

Newsday Network,Mexico has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on a wide range of goods imported from Asian nations that do not have trade deals with it, including India. Coming into force on 1 January 2026, the move is expected to hit India’s automobile exports the hardest, with around $1 billion worth of shipments now facing significantly higher duties. Mexico says the decision will protect its domestic industries and reduce reliance on Asian imports, although analysts suggest it may also be aimed at appeasing the United States. India, whose carmakers count Mexico as their third-largest export market, is now seeking diplomatic engagement to mitigate the impact.
