Tiger killed in trap by poachers in Satpura, 37th death this year
Newsday Network
Bhopal: A tiger apparently fell victim to a deadly wire snare laid by poachers in the forests adjoining Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) in Nar-madapuram district. The carcass was found on Friday on the banks of the Tawa Ri-ver near Badh-Chapra Ghat, with its right front limb se-vered.
Officials suspect the sna-re was meant for herbivores, but the tiger accidentally walked into it. This is the 37th death of a tiger in Madhya Pradesh in 2025. The tiger deaths include the death of a white tiger in Mukundpur zoo recently. All others died in the wild either in territo-rial conflicts or as victims of poachers’ traps.
The tiger carcass was spotted aro-und 10.30 am by a patrol-ling team on a motorboat.
STR field director Rakhi Nanda, DFO Mayank Gur-jar, wildlife doctor Gurudutt Sharma and SDO Vinod Ver-ma reached the site with a dog squad. “A snare was fo-und near the carcass and the tiger’s right forelimb was missing,” Nanda confirmed, adding that the exact cause of death will be known only after the postmortem.
Forest officials explai-ned that clutch-wire snares are among the deadliest hunting devices.
